A ‘hidden’ gourmet pancake gem in the heart of Newcastle proved to be a huge hit on Tuesday for Pancake Day and it’s little wonder, as it is selling a £6 crepe that is a sure fire 10/10.
Tucked away in Alley 4 of the Grainger Market, Crepes Gourmet commands your attention with its bright and vibrant aesthetic and then draws you in with the very inviting smell coming from inside, as chefs cook up a vast array of pancakes in front of your eyes. Having rather conveniently left our lunch at home and working in Newcastle city centre, ChronicleLive felt it only apt that we paid our first visit on Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day and we’re so glad we did!
Whether you are more of a sweet or savoury persuasion when it comes to pancakes, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the Crepes Gourmet menu, with an array of fillings and toppings to tickle your tastebuds. Full disclosure here, now when it comes to pancakes this particular reporter is rather unadventurous, opting for basic lemon and sugar almost every time – more often than not from the confines of my mam’s kitchen!- but I decided to broaden my horizons and go for the Romana crepe – filled with mozzarella, cheddar, fresh basil and sun dried tomato pesto.
And it was a choice I most definitely did NOT regret. Given I had a lot of work to get through, I sadly couldn’t join the many other diners to have a sit in meal, instead taking my £6 folded crepe back to the office to tuck into at my desk, sparking plenty of curiosity from my colleagues. They were shouts of ‘£6’s a bit steep isn’t it?’ but, while it could be argued it’snot exactly a budget friendly lunch, it’s a Pancake Day purchase that was certainly worth every penny; in my humble opinion, anyway. The flavours were both rich and moreish, with the blend of the two cheeses absolutely delicious and set off to perfection by the basil and pesto.
If the Romana crepe doesn’t sound like its up your street, Crepes Gourmet, who declare their food is ‘made with love for an authentic taste experience,’ isn’t just for Pancake Day, it’s open all year round, with its other savoury menu options including Ham and Cheese for £6 and Spicy Diavola and Spanish, both for £7, while those will a sweet tooth should be catered for by traditional lemon and sugar – the cheapest item on the menu at £4, Nutella for £5.50, Biscoff slightly more expensive at £6 and Exotic and Crunchy Banofee, both £7.
