Newcastle is a step closer to getting a ‘super’ Next in the city, with a huge billboard revealing when it is likely to open.
As soon massive Debenhams in Eldon Square closed in May 2021, after doubts were cast over its future, speculation was rife on what might replace it, given that it was such a huge retail space. Debenham’s massive store at the Metrocentre in Gateshead has now been replaced by the huge state of the art Everlast gym, but it will be shopping giant Next who go into the vacant Eldon Square premises in St Andrew’s Way.
Rumours that a major retailer was going into the old Debenhams building first swirled in 2023, with it then confirmed in March 2024 that it would indeed by Next that was taking it on, with its current premises, just up the mall from its new home, closing as a result. Excited about the 61,000 sqft new store, Next’s Jayne Pushon said: “We are very excited to be launching a new large format store in Newcastle and look forward to welcoming more customers to Eldon Square.
“We are delighted to be able to introduce customers to our new home and beauty department, where we will have staff on hand to talk more about our exciting product ranges in the new store.”
And now there is an indication as to when the new Next will open, with huge signs going up on the still empty building to announce that it will be coming in ‘Summer 2025.’
It’s been more than six years since Next opened one of its biggest flagship stores in the UK at the Metrocentre, seen in the photo above, with the large two storey outlet selling women’s, men’s and children’s clothes, as well as stocking plenty of home goods and having its own Costa coffee shop.
Like the Metrocentre store, the new ‘super’ Next in Newcastle will have a Bath & Body Works shop right next to it, with a huge billboard also now going up to advertise its impending arrival in Eldon Square.
