North Shields pub where ‘there’s always something happening’ name checked in Sam Fender song

It’s a pub that’s well known amongst locals and now a pub in North Shields looks set to spark curiosity and interest from people across the world, thanks to it being name checked by Sam Fender in a song on his new album.

Very proud of his North Tyneside roots, now three time Brit Award winner Sam, who took home Alternative/Rock Act on Saturday night, often references home turf in his music, as well as taking inspiration from people and places for his lyrics, including his late mentor Annie Orwin, who was the focus of his third album’s title track, People Watching.

The album rocketed straight to number 1 last week, with its sales of over 107,000 making it by far and away the biggest first week seller of 2025 so far. Sam’s weekend then got even better when he and the band picked up their latest Brit at the O2 Arena in London just 24 hours later, before delivering a barnstorming performance of People Watching.

And it’s a track from the UK’s current number 1 album that turns the spotlight on The Gunner pub, with the Trevor Terrace boozer featured in the first verse of the song Rein it In, in which Sam sings “I let go of everything I ever had. Cause I couldn’t give the love you deserved. By The Gunner you shouted ‘Oh my God!’ It seemed churlish, but it’s what I was owed, I suppose. Every flagstone of this town bears our prints And all the bars round here serve my ghosts and carcasses.”

Part of the famous Greene King pub chain, The Gunner describes itself as a pub ‘proud of its place at the heart of North Shields community.’

It adds: “Whether you want a quick catch up over a drink with family and friends, or you want to watch the action with our range of live sports and winning atmosphere. There’s always something happening at Gunner and whatever the occasion, you’re guaranteed a great atmosphere with fantastic value for money.”
