A North Tyneside housing estate’s new Co-op convenience store has an opening date.
ChronicleLive announced earlier this month that the new store on the Persimmon Homes Fallow Park Estate would be among the first of 75 of new stores opened by the chain in 2025. The Moor Drive store, near the Rising Sun Country Park, in Wallsend, opens on Friday, January 31.
Planning permission was granted by North Tyneside Council despite residents having mixed feelings about the new store, as reported by ChronicleLive in May last year. The new store has created 14 local jobs and offers customer parking and an electric vehicle charging point.
Added services include Costa Coffee Express, payment services via PayPoint, and and InPost locker for parcel collection and returns. Local shoppers will be able to order from the store via Deliveroo, with the store acting as a fulfilment hub for Co-op’s Quick Commerce operation.
Michael Dewison, Co-op’s East Benton store manager, said he was really looking forward to welcoming the local community to the new store. He said: “We’re here to contribute to local life and to serve and support our community, conveniently.”
As well as 75 new stores across the country, up to 80 further Co-op stores will also undertake major refurbishments in 2025, similar to those completed at the Co-op on Front Street in Tynemouth last month. Matt Hood, Co-op managing director, said: “We want everyone to have easy and convenient access to a Co-op store, wherever they live, and this year we are completely focused on achieving that through an ambitious and exciting new stores strategy.”
East Benton Co-op will be open between 6am and 10pm daily.
