One person has been taken to hospital after a car struck the central barrier of the A1(M) in County Durham.
The collision caused huge delays during rush hour, with traffic briefly held in its immediate aftermath. Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 62 (Carrville Interchange) and 61 (Bowburn Interchange) shortly before 5.30pm.
Though traffic was released, lane two of the southbound carriageway was blocked, leaving delays of up to 30 minutes. Traffic heading northbound was also slow, as onlookers looked to catch a glimpse of what ChronicleLive understands was an “overturned car”.
A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 17.26h today (March 11) to attend a road traffic collision on the southbound carriageway of the A1 (M) near junction 61. We dispatched an ambulance and clinical team leader who treated two patients; one of whom was discharged on scene and the other taken to hospital.”
