Parents to spend nearly £20 per child on World Book Day costumes this year

Parents across the UK are set to fork out an average of nearly £20 per child on costumes for this year’s World Book Day, according to a recent survey.

The event, scheduled for Thursday, March 6, 2025, aims to instil reading as a lifelong passion, with kids eager to honour their most cherished books and the creative minds behind them.

Research by cashback service Rakuten reveals that parents anticipate shelling out an average of £19 per child for World Book Day costumes – a slight increase from last year’s £17 average spend.

The Opinium survey, which gathered insights from 2,000 individuals in February, also highlighted a competitive streak among some parents, with 22% feeling pressured to impress with their costume choices.

A notable 11% of those surveyed admitted to splurging over £50 per child on outfits.

To potentially ease the financial strain, parents might consider scouring supermarket aisles for budget-friendly costumes, taking advantage of discounts, vouchers, and cashback offers, or creatively “re-purposing” costumes for various dress-up occasions throughout the year, including parties, Christmas, and Halloween.

Hand-me-downs from older siblings, costume swaps with other families, DIY outfits, and enquiries about local exchange schemes at schools are additional cost-cutting strategies.

To keep spending in check, some families may benefit from setting a firm budget for the festivities.

Here are some handy tips for last minute costume ideas.
