Kyle Walker has admitted that St James’ Park is a ‘really tough’ place to go once Newcastle United ‘get the wind behind their sails’.
Newcastle have lost just eight league games at home since Eddie Howe took charge of the relegation-threatened Magpies three years ago. Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Brighton are the only sides who have triumphed on Tyneside in the top-flight in that time.
Manchester City have won just one of their last four games on Tyneside in all competitions – conceding seven goals in the process – and Walker has reflected on the champions going into half-time 2-1 down last season after injury-hit Newcastle came from behind to lead at the break.
“Once they get wind behind their sails, it’s a really tough place to play football there,” the Manchester City captain told Together: 4-In-A-Row. “You look around at the faces and you kind of think, ‘Ahh, here we go again’.”
Manchester City ultimately ended up turning the game on its head in the second half following the introduction of substitute Kevin De Bruyne. Not only did De Bruyne score the visitors’ equaliser – the Belgium star set up Oscar Bobb’s winner right at the death.
Rodri called the 3-2 victory Manchester City’s ‘most important game of the season’, after the champions moved within two points of league leaders Liverpool, and boss Pep Guardiola told his players ‘they can do it’ following the dramatic comeback.
“Your legacy, guys? Your legacy will be this,” he said in the away dressing room afterwards. “The titles? Who cares about titles and numbers? The legacy, when you make a f—— stamp on history, is the way you f—— play, guys.”
