Here are 28 images capturing the celebration in Newcastle which saw former cast of the ITV hit reunite with crew and guests to share fond memories and get fans laughing all over again

Fans of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet made the absolute most of a double-treat at the weekend which packed out the O2 City Hall in Newcastle.

There were two special events hosted in one day to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the much-loved ITV series. Its first episode aired in November, 1983, introducing us to the ‘magnificent seven’: characters Dennis, Oz and Neville – the Geordie brickies – and Barry, Moxey, Wayne and Bomber, the friends they made when they left England to find work on a building site in Germany.

Such was the impact of the comedy-drama that its lead cast – Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail, Kevin Whately, Timothy Spall, Christopher Fairbank, Gary Holton and Pat Roach – became household names. And proving how fondly fans still remember the show, Saturday’s two events had sold out within minutes.

Cast and crew reunited on stage, with Healy, Nail, Whately and Fairbank getting a roar from the crowd when they appeared. Spall – who picked up a BAFTA TV award for best actor the next night for his performance in The Sixth Commandment – was unable to attend but was seen on a big screen sending his best wishes.

And the nostalgia-fest – organised by the Official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fan Site – paid special tribute to their late colleagues Holton and Roach, as well as Sammy Johnson: friend and popular local actor – with a clip of his own Auf Wiedersehen appearance featuring – who was the inspiration for the Sunday for Sammy fundraiser which, together with the charity FACT: Fighting All Cancers Together, was set to benefit from these anniversary events.

Special guests included other actors who appeared during the series run; the series’ creator Franc Roddam and its co-writer Dick Clement and local musicians including Kathryn Tickell. See a review of Saturday night’s show here and watch video here of the standing ovation it received at the end.
