A fish and chip restaurant by the sea in the most beautiful location has been named the third best in the UK at this year’s National Fish and Chip Awards. And it was just pipped at the post by another highly rated North East business.
Occupying a prime position at the top of the redeveloped Spanish City dome in Whitley Bay, Trenchers took no time at all to have rave reviews for its food pouring in, with many of its satisfied customers also declaring it one of the most stunning chippies they’d ever eaten in.
Given its acclaim from both locals and visitors to North Tyneside, it was little surprise that Trenchers made it onto the shortlist for this year’s National Fish and Chip awards, ‘the Oscars’ of the industry. The contenders for this year’s ceremony were revealed towards the end of last year, with Trenchers making the cut for Restaurant of the Year alongside County Durham institution Bells.
While it was Bells who emerged victorious, with their Framwellgate Moor branch winning the day, Trenchers finished a very respectable third place, meaning they were the highest place business for Tyne and Wear. And, it’s not the first time Trenchers, who also have a very famous and much visited restaurant in Whitby have received recognition at the National Fish and Chip Awards, as they won Restaurant of the Year in 2020.
As well as serving up top tier fish and chips, Trenchers are big on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for their diners, with live music from 6pm every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, to keep people entertained as they tuck in. And the Trip Advisor reviews speak for themselves; having been there in January, one customer headed up their 5 star review with the title ‘best fish and chips ever’ with another enthusing: “If you want a great traditional fish and chips restaurant with a wonderful ambiance, come here.”
