Popular Newcastle restaurant to close ‘within weeks’ after tough decision to shut down

After announcing ‘with a heavy heart’ that had made the incredibly tough decision to shut down, the owners of an immensely popular Newcastle restaurant have announced their plans for their last few days of business, including their official closing date.

Originally launched in Ouseburn and nestled under an arch of Stepney Bank, Thali Tray quickly caught the imagination and tickled the taste buds of many Geordies, with them even managing to adapt to the crippling times of the Covid pandemic, as people flocked to enjoy socially distanced trays of Indian goodness, either in their groups of six indoors or al fresco style, round some cosy fire pits.

In more recent years, Thali Tray have moved to both Sandyford and to the top floor of the busy Bealim House bar in Newcastle city centre; once again coming in for plenty of praise for the food served up at both locations. So it came as a big shock to its regular customers, when a statement was put out on social media to announce that both Sandyford and Gallowgate would be closing, with the trading ceasing at the latter with immediate effect.

Over the last few weeks, Thali Tray’s owners have been blown away by the waves of support that have come their way, in the aftermath of the sad news being broken and now they are determined to go out with a bang, announcing details of one last brunch, which will take place at the Sandyford restaurant from 9.30am until 2pm this Sunday, March 10.

And there isn’t long left to enjoy one of Thali Tray’s famous £10 trays (trust us, you do NOT want to miss out!) as Thali Tray’s final day of business will be on Saturday, March 15, the day before all eyes will be on Wembley for a certain cup final.

After being inundated by messages from their customers and congratulated on everything they’ve achieved with Thali Tray, its owners took to Facebook to write: “We just want to say a huge thank you for all the support you’ve shown us. We have been blown away by the comments, messages, and reservations that came flooding in. “
