Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris says it’s important for his side to maintain consistency in the promotion run-in with his side having ‘no time to waste.’
The Black Cats host Cardiff City this weekend at the Stadium of Light and sit 13 points ahead of seventh place. It means their place in the play-offs looks very secure, but the Sunderland chief is not taking anything for granted. Instead, he wants his players to keep their levels high and finish the season strongly.
The Frenchman said: “It’s not finished for the playoffs; we need points. Probably 10 or 12 points.
“So, it’s very important to maintain, deliver, and gain this momentum at the end of the season.
“It’s important to refresh the team to use every player available, to help the team and to keep the same consistency about the learning process. If we keep these ideas, I think we can build strong momentum at the end of the season.”
The Black Cats boss surprised fans when he started Eliezer Mayenda over top scorer Wilson Isidor last Friday against Sheffield Wednesday, but Mayenda made the most of his opportunity, scoring twice in the 2-1 win. Le Bris remained coy on whether he would start both Isidor and Mayenda against Cardiff, though he hinted it is unlikely.
He said: “It’s good news to have two good strikers. They play together sometimes, I think they are well connected and we are lucky to have two good strikers with different styles of play and personalities.
“They are pushing each other and are two hard workers and it’s very positive for the team, the club and the coach to have two good strikers with a good connection in the team.
“It’s possible they could play together but at the same time we still have 11 games to play and we have to manage our small squad because we don’t have many players available. At the minute I am more in the mindset to manage everyone rather than get them all on the pitch.
“It’s important to finish well and sometimes important to refresh the team and we did that at Sheffield. For the group and the team it was really positive.”
