Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley took a moment to update viewers on ITV colleague Rageh Omaar after a ‘medical emergency’ left fans concerned during a news segment on Friday, 26 April.
The news anchor was taken ill during Friday evening’s News At Ten, when Rageh appeared to battle with his speech prompting widespread alarm from viewers at home.
ITV then confirmed that Rageh had indeed been very unwell. They said: “We appreciate viewers of last night’s News at Ten were concerned about Rageh Omaar’s wellbeing.
“Following medical treatment at hospital, he is now recovering at home with his family. We are wishing Rageh a speedy recovery and look forward to him being back on screen when he feels ready.”
When ITV confirmed Rageh had been hospitalised, but was now recuperating at home, messages of support poured in. And Rageh expressed his gratitude in a statement circulated by ITV News.
Rageh said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and good wishes, especially all the medical staff, all my wonderful colleagues at ITV News, and our viewers who expressed concern.”
He continued to say: “At the time, I was determined to finish presenting the programme. I am grateful for all the support I’ve been given.”
Viewers are still wanting updates on Rageh’s health and got one during Good Morning Britain. During the show on Monday, 29 April, Richard paused the usual show to address concerns.
Richard said: “Now, time to talk about our good friend and colleague Rageh Omaar, who of course, has taken ill recently in the news.”
Richard’s co-star Susanna Reid chimed in with her well wishes: “Well we wish him all the very best!” Richard then reassured viewers: “I was going to say, other than to wish him the very best. Apparently he’s making a good recovery at home. He should be back on screens soon.”
Rageh first became ill just minutes into Friday’s broadcast, when viewers began to notice that the star appeared to be shaky on screen and struggling to speak.
Following Rageh being taken ill, the scheduled re-run of the news broadcast on ITV+1 was pulled. In its place, a message appeared telling viewers the channel was “temporarily unable to bring you our +1 service”.
Viewers and celebs took to social media to wish Rageh a speedy recovery. Rageh’s colleague Chris Ship wrote: “Wishing our friend and colleague @ragehomaar a fast recovery. All his friends at @itvnews are thinking about him. And can I praise the @Ldn_Ambulance paramedics who were quite simply amazing. Thank you”.
Channel 4 News journalist Ayshah Tull wrote: “Wishing the amazingly kind and wonderful journalist @ragehomaar a speedy recovery and sending my love to his family at what was a very worrying time for them”.
