Divisive MP George Galloway was the subject of a tense interview with Good Morning Britain presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid on Tuesday 30 April.
First, George, who won the Rochdale by-election on 1 March for the Workers’ Party of Britain, argued with presenter Susanna Reid and accused her of putting him on trial with her line of questioning. “You’re here for an interview, George Galloway. No one is putting you on trial, this is a television studio and you represent a political party,” she replied, before George began talking over her.
In response to subsequently being described as divisive, George said: “I have been elected over 37 years in parliament. The facts are I have represented more constituencies than any other political figure in British political history other than Mr Churchill who had the benefit of always doing it from the two main parties.”
The interview soon descended into chaos as Richard joined in to ask George about his infamous meeting with Saddam Hussein in 1994 and whether the MP now believed that meeting was a mistake.
“I made lots of mistakes but not that one and that jibe doesn’t quite have the sting it used to,” George replied. “It was 25 years ago – you might have found some newer cuttings to throw at me.”
He also argued: “I have spoken about this decades ago. So the British people are in a crisis. Our country can’t even defend its own border. It can’t even keep control of the thousands of people who’ve arrived here illegally. The NHS is in total crisis. Our country’s falling apart around our ears. And you want to talk about something that happened thirty years ago!”
The MP has always been a controversial political figure, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently delivering a cutting speech at 10 Downing Street in March following George’s by-election win.
“It’s beyond alarming that last night, the Rochdale by-election returned a candidate that dismisses the horror of what happened on October 7, who glorifies Hezbollah and is endorsed by Nick Griffin, the racist former leader of the BNP,” said Rishi Sunak at the time.
Following the GMB interview, which Richard referred to as a “pyrotechnics display” later in the show, viewers flooded X with comments about George Galloway’s TV clash with Richard and Susanna.
One wrote: “Madeley was visibly enraged during that interview with Galloway #comedygold,” while another commented: “George Galloway continuing to be an absolute EMBARRASSMENT on GMB.”
Another comment included: “Who on earth voted for this idiot.” Meanwhile a GMB fan praised Susanna Reid’s handling of the interview, writing: “God, what a patronising, arrogant bully. Fair play to Susanna for handling this a*****e like a pro.”
