Sainsbury’s has made a significant change to 77 of its UK stores. The supermarket has introduced eco-friendly, plastic-free packaging for its own-brand Ripe and Ready Avocados twin pack, aiming to reduce plastic waste.
Once fully implemented, Sainsbury’s expects to save 20.2 million pieces of plastic annually. The new packaging, made of paper with bamboo netting, is fully recyclable at the kerbside and is currently being trialed in 77 stores, with plans for a wider rollout later this year.
Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation, stated: “Switching to paper packaging across our Ripe and Ready Avocados twin pack is one of the many steps we are taking to fulfil our commitment towards a greener future. The initiative reflects our continuous efforts to help develop more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions and we’re excited for our customers to try out the new packaging in-store”. Additionally, Sainsbury’s has reduced the price of its avocados to £1.35 as part of its Nectar Prices, a 30p saving that will last until January 25.
This move is part of the supermarket’s ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste, a goal shared by other UK supermarket chains. Last year, Sainsbury’s made a significant shift from plastic to cardboard punnets for its Taste the Difference range of berries and cherries, resulting in an annual reduction of over 160 tonnes of plastic.
Additionally, the supermarket chain transitioned to cardboard mushroom punnets, which will cut down on 775 tonnes of plastic each year. Sainsbury’s is also in the process of replacing all plastic packaging for its kitchen and toilet rolls, reports the Mirror.
Once this change is fully implemented, it is expected to decrease plastic usage by more than 485 tonnes. To further guide customers, Sainsbury’s has introduced the “Good to Know” logo, designed to highlight products with improved packaging or components, such as those with less plastic.
This initiative is part of Sainsbury’s commitment to enhancing “sustainability, animal welfare, and communities”.
Fellow supermarket giant Tesco also announced changes across supermarket stores, as it looks to battle a rise in shoplifting.
