Sam Fender ‘dead cert’ to earn number 1 album and Brit award in same weekend

Sam Fender is being heavily backed to have a weekend to remember with him being viewed as a ‘dead cert’ to land both a number 1 album and a Brit Award in just over 24 hours.

Close to four years after the release of his sophomore album Seventeen Going Under and following immense anticipation from his fans, North Shields icon Sam released third LP People Watching at the end of last week, with the new collection of songs immediately being lapped up by music lovers and critics alike. By Monday, it was revealed in the midweek chart update that Sam was on course to outsell the rest of the top 10 combined and by Tuesday, his figures had increased to 90,000, putting him well on course to be the first British solo artist to surpass 100,000 in opening week since Harry Styles, who did that with 2022’s Harry’s House.

Featuring the anthemic title track, Arm’s Length and the incredibly moving Remember My Name, written about his grandparents, People Watching sets Sam up very nicely for a packed few months, which as well as seeing him perform at Saturday’s Brit Awards, will take him and his band to Europe, to the world famous Coachella festival in America and to ST James’ Park in Newcastle, where they’ll play three sell out shows.

And, speaking of the Brits, their performance doesn’t look like bring the only time Sam and the band are on stage as they are being seen as ‘unbeatable’ in the battle to win Best Rock/Alternative Act; with fans given the chance to vote for that category since Brits nominations were announced in January.

Sam is ahead of the pack on 2/1 with Betway to take Best Rock and he’s also in contention for Artist of the Year, although on odds of 6/1, he’s some way behind overwhelming favourite Charli XCX.

Betway spokesperson Mike Reading, commented: “North East star and former Little Mix member JADE is making waves in the Pop Act category (4/1) and is also in the running for Song of the Year with Angel of My Dreams (10/1), which became one of the sounds of the summer after she released her debut single since going solo.

“With such strong representation from the North East, all eyes will be on whether Sam and Jade can bring home an award on the night.”

One star who knows a thing or two about winning a Brit is Robbie Williams and this week, the ex Take That star publicly invited Sam to join him on stage at the come Together festival in June. Speaking to ChronicleLive, Robbie said: “Let me tell you this, I want Sam Fender to come sing with me. I would love that! If he would grace me with his presence that would make an old man very happy.”
