Sam Fender gets third number 1 album with highest first week sales of his career so far

At the beginning of what is gong to be quite a weekend for him, Sam Fender has shot straight to the top of the UK album charts with the highest first week sales of his career to date.

Before it was even released last Friday, February 21, Sam’s third album People Watching had already generated a huge amount of buzz thanks, thanks to the success of its barnstorming title track, second single Arms Length and incredibly moving recent hit Remember My Name, featuring members of Easington Colliery Brass Band.

Earning five star reviews from some critics and being lapped up by fans, People Watching was always a dead cert to get number 1, but the style in which Sam and his band have reached the summit is mightily impressive. In its first seven days, People Watching amassed 107,100 chart units, making its his biggest opening so far by some margin, as well as being the fastest seller of 2025 so far. For context, Sam’s debut Hypersonic Missiles debut managed a 40,900 opening week, while 2021’s Seventeen Going Under netted 43,700.

And getting another number 1 album and those tremendous sales should be just the tip of the iceberg for Sam this weekend as, on Saturday night, as well as him and the band performing at the Brits 2025, he is also up for two awards, including Alternative/Rock Act, which he is the big favourite to win.

The next few weeks are going to be hectic too, with the European dates of the People Watching tour, before a set at Coachella in America. And then comes the big one – three sold nights at St James’ Park in June, as well as his biggest show to date at the London Stadium.
