Sandro Tonali AC Milan transfer truth clear as Newcastle shown £18.1m reality

Sandro Tonali’s future at Newcastle United has become a talking point in recent weeks amid ongoing rumours regarding a possible move back to Italy.

Tonali has been a key player for the Magpies this season since returning from his ban, making 32 appearances across all competitions with three goals to his name. The 24-year-old has played an important role in helping Newcastle reach the Carabao Cup final, which gives the club the chance to win a major trophy for the first time since 1969.

It was just 18 months ago that Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan in a deal worth £55million. Reports from Italy in recent months have speculated that a return to his homeland could be on the cards for the Magpies No.8, with Milan, Juventus and Manchester United rumoured to be interested in the player.

However, despite that reported interest, it’s clear Newcastle have no intention of selling their midfield maestro and if they were to entertain offers, they would be considerably higher than the price they paid back in the summer of 2023, likely pricing AC Milan out of a move. At the time of his arrival, Transfermarkt valued the midfielder at €50million (£41.3million), with that valuation quickly rising to €60million (£49.5million) after his impressive start to life at St. James’ Park.

However, that figure has decreased over the last year, which will likely be down to Tonali’s unavailability after being handed a 10-month ban from all football by FIFA. Transfermarkt now value the Newcastle midfielder at €38million (£31.4million), which has remained the same since the end of last season but does mark an overall £18.1million decrease.

Tonali recently had an interview in Italy where he spoke about the rumours concerning his future at Newcastle making it clear he does not want to leave St. James’ Park. The midfielder would also refuse to rule out a return to Milan at some point in his career.

“I have never spoken about returning (to Serie A) with my agents,” said Tonali in an interview with La Repubblica. “And I know, from experience, that if you don’t get to that point, there is nothing concrete.

“Anyway, in any case, I am happy with myself here, I have found my rhythm here, and there is no need to upset it again.”

Tonali added: “I have no regrets. The idea of returning to Milan one day is there, but it’s not the thought that comes when I wake up in the morning.”
