If you’re wanting to add some zest to your dull January, you might want to head just outside of Newcastle to sample the area’s newest brunch spot, which is promising ‘big and bold’ flavours, as it aims to make a great first impression.
Until last year, the premises at 22 Osborne Road, right in the heart of Jesmond‘s thriving food and drink scene, was home to the offices of Baskey’s letting agents, but has now undergone a radical transformation, with its interior and exterior completely overhauled to become Tilia, a brand new business that is aiming to deliver ‘artisan drinks, cozy vibes and seasonal menus and is ‘inspired by love for delicious food and great times.’
Tilia opened its doors for the first time last week and now, just like may other food and drink venues in around Newcastle, is aiming to tempt diners in with some very tasty offers, celebrating Restaurant Week, with its own deal that is offering customers 50% off food from Tuesday right through to Sunday.
ChronicleLive paid a visit to Tilia on Tuesday afternoon, sitting down with owner Seval Leonard, who has made the switch from the aesthetics industry to hospitality to open up a place she is already immensely proud of.
“The idea to open Tilia is born from my love of food. I come from Turkey and we love our food and we love to talk about it!” she explained. This is my first experience of opening a restaurant and it’s been a challenge but the feedback we’ve had so far has been very positive. There are lots of students here in Jesmond and we wanted to create a relaxed and chilled environment and great food that both they and residents can enjoy.”
Tilia gets its name from the tree that stands right outside its front door and, when it comes to its impressive food offerings, the man behind them is chef Zaffar Shareer. Having been given free rein by Seval to ‘make the menu his own’, Zaffar is very keen to impress, telling us: “Our menu has dishes with big and bold flavours, influenced by different culture, giving British cafe cuisine an uplift. You might find what we do elsewhere, but we do it much more elevated.”
