Shock as major awards show cancelled for 2024 – as organisers promise it will return

The MTV Movie and TV Awards will not be going ahead for 2024. Fans are being informed that this year’s event is going to be postponed due to the ceremony getting a brand new makeover.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter the show will be returning to screens with a new ‘reimagined’ format – but that won’t be until 2025. A reason behind the postponement has not been confirmed.

Originally named the MTV Movie Awards, the annual event began in 1992, before updating its name to what it’s known as today in 2017. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 awards were also cancelled.

Drew Barrymore was set to host the 2023 awards, but dropped out in solidarity with the WGA strikes

The 2023 ceremony was originally to be hosted by Drew Barrymore, but the Hollywood actress dropped out in an act of solidarity with the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. When Barrymore stepped back out as host, it was agreed she would not return to host the 2024 edition.

She said at the time: “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike. Everything we celebrate and honour about movies and television is born out of their creation.

“And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

Last year’s show still went ahead, but it was largely made up of pre-recorded segments and acceptance speeches, as well as clips from various TV shows and films, and a number of videos from previous iterations of the awards. Awards categories, nominees and winners were announced via a voiceover.

The event was initially referred to the event as the “2023 MTV Movie and TV Awards special”, as it began to air. The Big winners from last year’s show included HBO’s The Last of Us, Scream VI, Top Gun: Maverick, and Wednesday. Hollywood legend Jennifer Coolidge was also presented with the Comedic Genius Award in honour of her career.
