In an interview on The Breakfast Club, rapper-turned-politician Shyne said that Diddy confronted him after learning he was dating Brandy at the same time as Mase.
At around the 24-minute mark of the video above, Shyne admitted to Charlamagne and DJ Envy that ego got the best of him after he signed with Bad Boy Records. “I thought I was Puff,” he said. “There’s stories of his, like, main girl that, you know, I was dealing with because I thought I was that guy.” Charlamagne asked him if this meant he was in a relationship with Jennifer Lopez at some point, which he clarified was not the case.
“I can’t say who, but not her,” he said. “I got in in ’98, and instead of getting in the studio and getting the information, I was living the life and so that caused a strain between [Diddy] and I. He was like, ‘Who does this kid think he is?’ And there’s even situations like with Mase. Mase was dating a girl and I started dating the girl and that caused a big thing, we had to have a family meeting.”
While he didn’t mention Brandy by name, Charlamagne assumed as much, which prompted a laugh from Shyne, as Mase was in a relationship with Brandy around the time of her 1998 album, Never Say Never. “It was like, ‘Yo, what are you doing? You know, you’re like Kobe coming to the Lakers, and, you know, you want to go after Shaq’s joint.’ Like, you can’t do that. And that’s what I was on for ’98. I wasn’t focused.”
He further explained that the woman he didn’t directly identify was “selling millions of records” at the time. Shyne added that DJ Clark Kent reveals who it is in the Hulu documentary The Honorable Shyne, which debuted on November 18. Kent corroborated Shyne’s claims in the doc.
“We had an argument. And she said, ‘Yo, you’re nobody… You’re nobody. You ain’t sell one record. You think you styling, and you think you’re that. You’re nothing. You haven’t sold a record,’” Shyne said. “And that hit me like the hand of God just slapped me back into reality because she was telling the truth. I wasn’t there to date R&B divas and pop divas and look fly. I was there to make hit records. And I wasn’t doing that. That shook me up.”
