Snoop Dogg fondly recalls passing the crown of West Coast rap to Kendrick Lamar.
The Missionary rapper appeared on The Bootleg Kev Podcast this week, and among discussing other Kendrick topics like GNX track “wacced out murals,” Snoop spoke about crowning the Compton native as “King of the West Coast” in 2011.
The emotional moment happened at Los Angeles concert venue Music Box, where Kendrick was co-signed by Snoop, Dr. Dre, The Game, Kurupt, and more.
Around the 30-second mark of the video below, Snoop explained that Game was “carrying the torch” at the time and thus was onstage with the other California rap notables.
“It was all a part of us seeing that [Kendrick] was the next in line. That’s how we do it on the West. We give it to who’s accordingly running the show,” Snoop said. “And it was no discussion that we had three weeks ago. That shit happened right there.”
The Long Beach native added that he was in the crowd with Dre while Kendrick was performing, and shortly after being invited onstage, he gave Kendrick his credit.
“So I go on stage and he do another song then another song. And they look over at me and they hand me the mic I’m like ‘Man, fuck all that shit, n***a. This n***a’s the king,'” Snoop recalled.
He concluded, “And everybody agreed, and that n***a broke down in tears. And it was beautiful because I watch him now and I see all the work he put in before he took the crown and after he got the crown. He is a true king.”
Four years after the iconic rap concert, Snoop was featured on Kendrick’s To Pimp a Butterfly track “Institutionalized.”
After Drake used AI technology to replicate Snoop’s voice on Kendrick diss track “Taylor Made Freestyle,” Snoop jokingly reacted to it on Instagram, which Kendrick referenced on “wacced out murals.”
“Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made,’ I prayed it was the edibles/I couldn’t believe it, it was only right for me to let it go,” Kendrick raps on the track.
Snoop told Bootleg Kev that Kendrick was entitled to his opinion and that he suggested he could’ve been a better “big homeboy.”
“That’s my nephew. He’s a rapper, man. He’s supposed to speak his mind and tell his truth,” Snoop said. “That’s the way he felt and he has the right to say that. I’m his big homeboy so I have to take what’s given to me from his perspective because he’s speaking truth. And the truth shouldn’t hurt you, it should make you better.”
