A popular local breakfast stop-off is out to add more spice to life with the launch of a whole new concept at Stack in Seaburn.
Davey’s Breakfasts and Sandwiches – which started out in Sheriff Hill, Gateshead, four years ago, attracting a loyal following, and then switched to Durham Road in Low Fell, with a second shop in Sandyford, Newcastle – is now opening a first Mexicana branch in the Sunderland container village.
And, inspired by the owners’ foodie adventures in the US, the new Davey’s Mexicano is all set to serve up a wide range of tacos, loaded nachos and a new signature dish of Mexican ramen noodles. Rob West, who set up Davey’s with David Milburn during lockdown, says of their menu showpiece: “This is a dish that’s really taking off in the US and we believe we are the first people to bring it to the North East.
“Without giving the recipe away, the noodles are served in a spicy, Mexican gravy with slow cooked birria beef – so it’s traditionally Mexican but with an Asian influence.” First customers will get to try it when Davey’s Mexicano opens at Stack on May 3.
The owners, who both come from hospitality backgrounds, were inspired to create a new brand after finding that a range of tacos they served as an addition to the main menu at their sandwich shops proved a big hit with customers. There followed a year spent travelling around America, researching recipes and working out a new menu.
Of the popularity of their business, which has seen their initial team including colleagues Adam Brown – now executive head chef – and Tyler Marshall grow to around 100 staff, he says: “The demand for what we do has been huge and even though our menu is really extensive it has been increasingly clear that our taco range has really captured the public’s imagination.”
He thinks Stack will be the ideal site for the debut of their Mexicana brand – calling it “a key destination for food lovers” – and there it will be taking over the unit formerly occupied by Chapos Tacos. Gemma Dishman, Stack’s project development director, welcomes the new arrival, saying that customers will love the new brand.
“It might be a new concept but the business has a proven track record for providing excellent quality at realistic prices,” she said. For more about what is available at Stack see here.
