Stars celebrate at glittering BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards with nods to Christmas and reality TV

BBC Sports Personality of the Year is the biggest night in the sporting calendar, as stars gather to celebrate a year of sports achievements including the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, Euro 2024 in Germany, and the Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cups. The event, held at MediaCity in Salford, kicked off at 7pm on Tuesday 17 December with Gabby Logan, Clare Balding and Alex Scott hosting the event.

Alex looked stunning in a strapless black gown, while Clare dazzled in a trouser suit with a bronze brocade jacket and Gabby added to the glamour with a sparkling black fringe dress. The trio were onstage to oversee awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is being given to Sir Mark Cavendish, the Unsung Hero Award, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, the Helen Rollason Award given for “outstanding achievement in the face of adversity,” and of course, the much sought after Sports Personality of the Year award, for which the nominees are triathlete Alex Yee, para cyclist Dame Sarah Storey, darts player Luke Littler, Real Madrid and England’s Jude Bellingham, cricketer Joe Root, and Keely Hodgkinson, who won a gold over 800m in Paris.

Before the event, hosts Clare, Gabby and Alex spoke about the evening, with Clare revealing the moment she looks forward to most: “As well as the announcement of the top three, I love the Unsung Hero Award – it gives a chance to thank those who get young people started and who make sport special.” she said.

Gabby is also a fan: “Every award is special, from Unsung Hero which honours those that give back to their local community, to the six main award contenders that have achieved something truly spectacular. What I love most though is being able to see the athletes reflect on their achievements again with their family and friends around them. Reliving that winning moment with them all is an honour.”

Alex, meanwhile, loves the main award of the night. “It’s got to be announcing the overall winner. It’s such a prestigious award in the world of sport and you can tell how much it means to those that have won it before. It’s an emotional moment. Reading out the winning name and handing over the trophy is a highlight of the evening,” she said.
