Steph McGovern confirms return to TV just months after Channel 4 show axed

Steph McGovern has confirmed she is returning to TV five months after her daytime chat show Steph’s Packed Lunch was axed by Channel 4.

She recently posted a selfie to Instagram showing her in a car with her stylist on the way to her latest TV appearance. In the caption she wrote: “‘Let’s get a nice picture of us on our way to Have I Got News For You’ she says… Patrick,” followed by a tongue emoji to mimic the pose Patrick Bartley was making.

One fan commented: “You two – cheeky and gorgeous in equal measure,” while another wrote: “I think you should be the permanent host it’s always a good one when you’re on.”

There were some celebrity commenters too, with Carol Vorderman adding “Lols” and a laughing emoji and Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies noting: “Makeup looks FABULOUS here,” referring to Steph’s glamorous look. Another photo showed Steph in the makeup chair getting ready.

Yorkshire-born Steph has been a panellist and also guest hosted Have I Got News For You eight times before this most recent recording.

The political comedy quiz has now been on air for more than 30 years, with team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton appearing throughout the show’s run. Since 2002 there have been a series of well-known guest hosts including newsreaders Clive Myrie and Naga Munchetty, Pointless host Alexander Armstrong, academic Hannah Fry and actor Richard Ayoade.

Seasoned HIGNFY guest Steph is best known for her role as host of daytime series Steph’s Packed Lunch. The chat show was originally going to be called Steph’s Talks and was expected to launch in the spring of 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of the series, and instead Steph began presenting The Steph Show from her home in March 2020. Once pandemic restrictions were eased, Steph’s Packed Lunch began on Channel 4 in September 2020.

It featured regular guests including Anton du Beke, Denise Van Outen, Greg Wise and Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite, chatting about the day’s news as well as featuring celebrity interviews and consumer advice. Filmed in a studio overlooking Leeds Dock, the series was cancelled in October last year with the last show being broadcast on 8 December 2023.

At the end of the last show, a teary Steph turned to the camera and said: “We’ve had a proper laugh doing this show. Thank you for sharing your stories with us and being part of this dysfunctional family.”

She also said to her co-workers on the show: “It is really lovely to have you all here and everyone watching at home. One of the reasons I have loved doing this show is because it is in the north. We get to shout out about all the creative things the north has to offer. It has been amazing to broadcast live from Leeds every day.”
