TV presenter Stephen Mulhern has to pull out of a fan favourite show after the death of his dad. The star, who is best known for his work on Britain’s Got More Talent, Catchphrase, Deal or No Deal and Dancing on Ice, has had to step down from hosting Big Fat Soap Quiz this year due to the personal tragedy. The 47 year old star, who began his career at CITV, has always kept his personal life out of the spotlight.
However, it was revealed this week that he had to pull out of the show following the recent death of his father, Christopher. The news came after reports that Stephen had collapsed while dining out and was subsequently taken to hospital. He was checked over by paramedics but as a precaution he was taken from Sunningdale, Berks, to nearby Frimley Park hospital. A spokesperson for Stephen told OK! “Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful.
“In addition he had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken in to hospital as a precaution. He is now back home recovering.“
Stephen, who is stepping down from Big Fat Soap Quiz hosting duties due to his devastating loss, has previously spoken very fondly about growing up with his father Christopher in London’s East End, and the star, who began his career as a magician was introduced to tricks by his dad, practicing his skills whilst working on his market stall.
The star has credited his parents for his success, previously saying: “I don’t mean to sound soppy, but they worked so incredibly hard to bring up me and my two brothers and sister.”
Fans left wondering who will take Stephen’s place will temporarily enjoy former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay’s company as she steps in to host the 2024 edition of the quiz, which sees stars from Emmerdale and Coronation Street compete in a battle of soap knowledge.
The upcoming Big Fat Soap Quiz will feature team Corrie led by Jack P Shepherd, who has portrayed David Platt since 2000, and team Emmerdale led by Mark Charnock, known for his role as Marlon Dingle. The rest of their team members are yet to be announced.
