Amanda Abbington has had a tough time over the last year, appearing on Strictly Come Dancing and subsequently pulling out of the show – revealing she suffered from PTSD after stepping down from the BBC dance competition.
However, the Sherlock actress is set for some happier times ahead, as she is set to wed her fiance Jonathan Goodwin next year, and has opened up to OK! this week about the details of the nuptials. Sharing that she will say ‘I Do’ to America’s Got Talent stuntman Jonathan on a farm when we probe where the big day is taking place, Amanda said: “[It’s] At my friend’s house – she has a lovely farm, so we’re going to do it here in the UK.”
Their big day will be attended by some familiar faces too, as Amanda added: “The actress Sue Vincent, who starred in Shameless and Coronation Street, and is my son’s godmother, is going to be my maid of honour. We’ve been friends for over 30 years.”
Not everything is set in stone yet, with Amanda admitting she and her partner of three years are still in the process of planning, which has taken a backseat since Jonathan suffered serious spinal injuries when a stunt went wrong in 2021. Only months into their whirlwind romance, Jonathan, found himself paralysed for life after a daring escapade went awry.
The incident, part of the now-axed series America’s Got Talent: Extreme, involved attempting to escape from a straitjacket while hanging upside down 30 feet in the air. Jonathan’s injuries were extensive, including the loss of a kidney, broken shoulder blades, shattered legs, a broken spine, and a severed spinal cord.
Sharing that they’re getting back on track, Amanda explained that wedding planning is now underway, as she said: “We don’t know yet [whether it will be a big or small affair]. We’re still planning, and we’re just enjoying him getting well and getting fit and strong again.
“It’s been a rough few months, but we’re trawling back.”
Amanda has rarely spoken about her nuptials, but got engaged to Jonathan within days of knowing him, the stuntman getting down on one knee during their first date. Amanda then shared that ‘when you know, you know’.
Before Jonathan, Amanda was in a relationship with actor Martin Freeman and shares children Joe and Grace with The Hobbit star. The former couple were together for 16 years until their split in 2016 – admitting they could ‘no longer live together’.
