Youngster Harrison Jones has described signing a new contract with Sunderland as a “proud moment and real honour” after extending his stay on Wearside until 2026.
The 19-year-old midfielder first joined the Academy of Light at aged six, featuring at every youth level, and has since made his first-team debut in this season’s League Cup fixture against Preston North End.
He has high hopes for the future and told the club: “I am delighted to continue this journey at my boyhood club. I have obviously been here for a very long time. I love everything about the club and desperately want to try and break through to the first team. I am having to work hard every day and I’m happy I have been rewarded with a new contract.”
Being injured previously made him miss the game and he explained: “It gave me the hunger to push even harder which I have done and missing it has allowed me to get my enjoyment back in football. I’ve made lifelong friendships here and they have developed me into a really good footballer and hopefully I can get better.”
Jones has already made an appearance for the senior squad, in the defeat to Preston North End in the League Cup.
He added: “It’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was a young kid trying to break through and I’ve had my first taste and I want more. I have loved every moment of being here and look forward to the future with Sunderland
“I can’t thank the staff enough for their continuous support. It was only two years ago I spent the full season injured and didn’t feature at all. To push on from that and make my debut was a real privilege. I know the hard work doesn’t stop there. I want to keep reaching new levels to earn more opportunities in the squad. This is my home, this has been my life for nearly 15 years now. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
He also commented on Regis Le Bris, the man who handed him his first-team debut, and said: “He is is obviously really good, and young so is quite easy to relate to. He has lots of young players to work with and hopefully he continues to develop us and we can go on and get promotion.”
