Sunderland need one thing to bring back Newcastle United derbies claims star

Former Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke reckons “consistency” is key for the club in their bid to get promoted back to the Premier League. The 53-year-old old from Trinidad & Tobago ended his career with the Black Cats and has a strong affinity with the club.

He was released by the club after one season, in 2008/09, and that was that for the striker who made close to 250 appearances for Aston Villa before winning the treble with Manchester United.

Yorke is keeping a close eye on Sunderland’s results and has noticed their rivals for promotion are not having it all their own way themselves. He thinks Regis le Bris’ side can take advantage of that situation in the games to come.

The Black Cats currently sit in fourth place in the table. Above them, the likes of leaders Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United continue to push their claims but haven’t had it their own way recently with a number of dropped points.

Given Sunderland travel to Burnley on Friday for a huge promotion clash, Yorke believes consistent performances will see Sunderland return to the Premier League. And he believes it will be good for the region, with a return of the Wear-Tyne on the agenda.

Speaking to CoinCasino.com, Yorke said: “Sunderland have given themselves a great chance to get promoted to the Premier League this season.

“They’re right in the mix at the moment. Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield United are dropping points and they could get a sniff of automatic qualification.

“Sunderland just need to keep up this consistency until the end of the season. Premier League football would be perfect for the Sunderland fan base, they’re a huge club and it could reignite the rivalry against Newcastle United, which is always so fierce.”

Only three points separate leaders Leeds and Sunderland in fourth. There is then a nine-point gap to fifth placed Middlesbrough, who Sunderland meet at the start of February.
