Sunderland release Jayden Danns statement after medical identified injury issue

Sunderland’s loan move for Jayden Danns has been sealed – but the player won’t be able to play for the club for a while after his medical uncovered an injury problem.

The Black Cats announced the signing of the forward on loan until the end of the 2024-25 season after a deadline day move that included a twist. Danns completed all the relevant paperwork before the 11pm deadline but wasn’t announced as Sunderland signing while an injury issue was ironed out and due to the game against Middlesbrough last night.

The 19-year-old striker’s medical at Sunderland identified a back injury which will delay his debut for the Black Cats.

A Sunderland statement said: “Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of Jayden Danns on loan until the end of the 2024-25 season. The 19-year-old striker, who has featured for Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders on four occasions this campaign, completed all the relevant paperwork before 11pm deadline day.

“An academy product of parent Club Liverpool, Danns will now complete a period of rehabilitation to return from a back injury that was identified during the medical process. The first stages of his recovery will take place at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre and we look forward to welcoming Jayden back to Wearside in due course.

“All at SAFC look forward to supporting Jayden’s rehabilitation and we look forward to his return to the North East.”

Danns had been identified by Sunderland as being the striker they needed to help propel them towards promotion from the Championship. The Black Cats sit fourth in the table after victory over Middesbrough on Monday night.

As part of the loan move, Danns signed a new long-term contract at Anfield on Monday. The striker joined Liverpool aged eight and last scored for the Reds one month ago, as Slot’s side secured a 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.

Head coach Regis Le Bris hailed Sunderland’s “passion and identity” as they came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory at the Riverside. His men fell behind inside 10 minutes when Delano Burgzorg gave Boro the perfect start in this Championship clash.

Dan Neil equalised with a deflected strike that beat Mark Travers, before Wilson Isidor coolly rounded the Boro goalkeeper to net his 10th goal of the season early in the second period, following a brilliant assist from the inspired Enzo Le Fee. Against the run of play, Hayden Hackney restored Middlesbrough’s lead, but Le Fee’s magic saw him glide past Luke Ayling and deliver a dangerous cross that defender Ryan Giles cracked into his own net from 12 yards.

The result moved Sunderland to within three points of the top two, level on points with Burnley in third, while extending their unbeaten league run to six games. It was their first league win at the Riverside in 20 years.
