Sunderland set for injury boost as forgotten figure returns

Sunderland are set for an injury boost ahead of their Championship clash at home to Norwich City on Saturday. Winger Ian Poveda is poised to return to the squad ahead of their upcoming games after returning to training.

Poveda, 24, has made just three appearances for the Black Cats this season after making the switch from promotion rivals Leeds United. He will give another option to the attack with the continued absence of Romaine Mundle as well as Tommy Watson.

The Black Cats handed Poveda a three-year deal in the summer, running until June 2027, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months on top of that.

Poveda was loaned out by Leeds United to fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday just over 12 months ago and he spent the second-half of last season with the Owls to help them avoid relegation to League One.

The Colombia international, who has two caps to his name, went on to play 36 games for Leeds and was loaned out to Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and then Wednesday prior to linking up with Sunderland.
