After Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s 2024-defining feud made its way to the Oscars stage earlier this month with a joke told by first-time host Conan O’Brien, the topic has been broached by Jimmy Kimmel, himself a four-time host of the annual Academy Awards ceremony.
Naturally, the beef got a mention during Kimmel’s Tuesday night chat with SZA, during which the One of Them Days star was asked about her and Kendrick’s upcoming stadium tour.
First, Kimmel wondered whether the stage production would be similar to what the two pulled off for this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. According to SZA, she and Kendrick are “doing a new thing” and “doing a fun thing” this time around, with the result being “more funner” than their Super Bowl set.
“I think we’re both just kind of throwing all the paint at the wall,” she said. “This is both of our first stadium shows, for the two of us, so we have to pretty much go insane.”
Kendrick, SZA explained, is wizard-like in how he navigates his process, a trait that means he’s more on the “solitary beings” side of things. She also likened him to Merlin, joking that he’ll be backstage each night on the tour conjuring up the power to make both of them “take off and levitate” for fans.
Kimmel then brought up the tour’s routing, specifically its two scheduled stops in Toronto, i.e. Drake’s hometown.
“Are you worried about that at all?” Kimmel asked, prompting SZA to playfully throw the same question back at the host. From there, Kimmel said that he himself is “not worried about it,” a sentiment SZA, again playfully, proceeded to echo.
“I wouldn’t be either,” she said. “I think it’s gonna be so fun. Are you gonna come?”
While still not mentioning names, Kimmel opted to dig in a bit more, asking SZA, “What if you-know-who shows up to the show in Toronto?” Again, SZA kept it coy, offering, simply, “Who knows who? Who knows you know who know what?”
The “wizard” talk then returned, with Kimmel joking that Kendrick could “wave his wand and they will disappear,” while SZA referred to the GNX artist as “the man behind the curtain.”
See more from SZA and Kimmel above, including a discussion on the five-time Grammy winner’s affinity for bugs and the possibility of a One of Them Days sequel. The Grand National Tour, meanwhile, is slated to kick off next month.
As for Drake, he told fans this week that his “next chapter may leave you feeling uneasy.” The statement comes as Kendrick’s GNX and Drake’s joint PARTYNEXTDOOR album are occupying the top two positions on the Billboard 200 chart. Both albums peaked at No. 1 on the chart, as did SZA’s SOS, which is currently at No. 4.
