Dan Burn insists Newcastle United have learned lessons from the club’s foray to the Carabao Cup final in 2023. Going into the game, Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has claimed his team is good enough to score up to five goals in the second leg. But Newcastle and Burn are focused on the task in hand at St James’ Park.
Two years ago, Newcastle, as a city, was on a real high after the Magpies ventured to their first Wembley showpiece since 1999. But there was also a slump in form at the wrong time and United reserved one of their worst performances of the season for the final against an average Man United team.
Ironically, Newcastle eased to victory against the Red Devils just weeks later after failing to turn up. As Newcastle prepare for another crack of getting to Wembley, Burn is looking forward to beating Arsenal then taking care of business against one of his old clubs Birmingham this week.
Burn said ahead of the game: “We learned a lot from that cup run. We were so focused on it at the time, but now we take it game by game. We have Arsenal and then the FA Cup. Arsenal will be tough. We did well not to concede down there in the first leg. They had a lot of good chances but we did not concede so that was very good. It is a huge game.”
Burn was one of the heroes of that cup run in 2023, famously scoring against Leicester City on Tyneside. The Blyth lad said: “We had not been to a cup final since 1999 then. So, not just us as a team, but the whole city was buzzing about it.
“But I think we have that experience from a couple of years back that anything can happen in this game. A 2-0 lead does not mean that this game is done and that we are in the final. We know how good Arsenal have been over the years, they have been close to winning the league in recent years and now they are doing well in the Champions League, we know how tough it is.”
Newcastle have suffered some sticky form in recent games, losing to Fulham and Bournemouth, Burn said: “When you are on a good run you can get ahead of yourself a little bit. It’s nice to get a bump sometimes then react to it. We lost to Bournemouth then beat Southampton with a good team performance.”
Martinelli had said after Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Man City: “We know our qualities. It’s not because we lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the last game – we are going to go there just to play now.
“We are going to go there to win the game and to score three, four, five. Let’s see. It is going to be another battle and we know how difficult it is to play there. But we have an amazing team and we trust ourselves. We have full confidence in our squad.”
