It’s a name that is synonymous with top notch fish and chips and Bells in Durham has taken a huge bite out of the competition, to be named the best restaurant in the UK at this year’s National Fish & Chip Awards.
For years now, if you ask anyone in the North East where their ‘go-to’ is for fish and chips on Good Friday or a chippy tea, you can guarantee that Bells will be mentioned by many people; thanks to its fine reputation and the fact it has successful businesses all over the region. And now its Framwellgate Moor venue has seen off rivals from all over the country to take home the Restaurant of the Year accolade at the ‘fish and chip Oscars’ this week.
Bells finished in pole position ahead of Cirencester’s Malt & Anchor and another highly rated North East chippy – Trenchers in Whitley Bay, with it a great night all around for the region, as there was also a North East victory in the evening’s other most contested category, Takeaway of the Year, with Yarm Road Fish & Chips in Darlington, bringing that honour back home.
Given that Trip Advisor is awash with glowing reviews for Bells, its win at the national ceremony will be no surprise to anyone who’s been there for a meal. Giving it a 5/5 rating, one satisfied customers declared ‘the fish was the best I have ever tasted’ as a second described the fish supper they ordered as ‘incredible.’
A diner who ended up in Bells on a trip to the North East was quick to heap praise on the restaurant too, posting: “Best we have ever had. Portions a good size double to what we get in the south the north leaves the south standing when it comes to fish and chips. It’s a shame we don’t live In the North.”
And, among the many others to give a full complement of five stars, another writes: “WOW! it was excellent. I’m still talking about it hours later to my husband.”
