The Glasshouse set to host BBC Proms weekend – three days of performances at Gateshead venue

In news that will be music to the ears of fans in the North East, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music today announces the line-up for a big BBC Proms weekend which is making a comeback with a summer series of concerts.

The Gateshead music centre will once again play host to the BBC institution as it extends its season beyond the Royal Albert Hall in London. Following on from the success of last year’s first weekend-long Proms festival at what was then Sage Gateshead, The Glasshouse celebration will be giving a national platform to local musical talent, as BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting live during the July 26-28 weekend.

To coincide with this Thursday’s news, tickets for the weekender are to go on sale at noon. It forms part of a nationwide music festival running from July to September which will see BBC Proms weekends in Bristol and Nottingham as well as Gateshead.

This marks the first chance for The Glasshouse to take part in the Proms under its new name and its managing director Abigail Pogson said: “Collaborating with BBC Proms for a second festival for the North East is something to really shout about. Our programme brings an abundance of musical talent across musical genres with our very own orchestra Royal Northern Sinfonia at the heart of the weekend.”

The other orchestras at the focus of the BBC Proms action will be the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Paraorchestra playing in Bristol and the BBC Concert Orchestra in Nottingham. The Glasshouse is where the exuberant celebration of classical music kick off on July 26.

On its first big night, the audience will watch Royal Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Dinis Sousa, perform what’s described as one of the most recognisable works for violin – Sibelius’s Violin Concerto – with violinist Alena Baeva who has been described by the New York Classical Review as “a magnetic presence”.

Other pieces on the night will include a ‘masterpiece’ grand finale. Later, BBC presenters Sarah Mohr-Pietsch and Hannah Peel will host an 11pm Night Tracks Live with performers including six RNS members.

Then July 27 will be day of ” soulful beats and contemporary collaborations” – says The Glasshouse – courtesy of Grammy-nominated musician Jordan Rakei and RNS then there will follow, at 10pm, the very first BBC Introducing Live at the Proms while a BBC Introducing stage will be set up in the concourse to show new independent artists from the North East and beyond.

On July 28, the Voices of the Rivers Edge choir made up of young singers from the region – previous performers at BBC Proms – will be back on stage with a show called Fantasy, Myths and Legends featuring music from the likes of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. The weekend will wrap up on the Sunday with an afternoon concert with violinist Daniel Pioro & Friends.

As an added treat, young music lovers from the area will be able to take part in workshops at the venue. Abigail said that the festival weekend will have something for everyone.

She said. “Music lives and grows at The Glasshouse and we can’t wait to welcome audiences – and via BBC Radio 3 to the festival.” For tickets and details of the full programme see here.

*Sites such as Viagogo and Vivid Seats allow fans to buy resale tickets from other fans. However, it is important to note that many event promoters say tickets should not be resold after initial purchase and will not be valid for admittance to gigs. Fans attending live events with tickets acquired through resale websites are advised to double check the ticket terms and conditions at the point of sale – such as Ticketmaster or Live Nation – to ensure a smooth live event experience. Tickets could be voided if they were found to be bought second-hand. As a result, fans are buying at their own risk. With that said, Viagogo also commented: “Viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the guarantee”.
