While it might not be the place that inspired the Frank Sinatra classic, Newcastle has its own New York and, while it might not be as globally famous as its Big Apple namesake, it does have a ‘must visit’ landmark and its own version of the Bronx.
When it comes to New York in North Tyneside and New York in the USA, there aren’t many similarities (but perhaps more than you’d think!) between the two, their name being the most obvious and legitimate one. The Big Apple came first as well, with our New York been given its name during the American war of independence in 1776, when THE New York was captured by British forces.
And while people flock from across the globe to see NYC’s famous monument, the Statue of Liberty, there’s one just a stone’s throw away from New York, North Tyneside, that’s also had its fair share of attention. Step forward the Silverlink Park Sundial, which is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of an 18 acre country park and nature reserve.
Although we’re not suggesting it could rival the iconic Central Park when it comes to tourist attractions, it has been described as one of the region’s ‘hidden gems’ and a great walk for families, which can be easily accessed by car (with free parking) or by rail. That is where you could argue there is another parallel between NE29 and NYC.
New York of course has its subway, but not to be outdone, North Tyneside has the Metro, which doesn’t tend to get as packed and now has a number of shiny new trains in operation, with New York served by Palmersville to the west and Northumberland Park to the east.
Sadly, there is no theatre district on a level with Broadway to boast about in North Tyneside’s New York, although the Whitley Bay Playhouse isn’t too far away and neither is Tynemouth Priory, which, when it comes to live entertainment, is THE place to be every single July for the Mouth of the Tyne festival.

New York City, thanks to its celebrity clad plays and musicals and famous residents, is a place brimming with star quality, but, speaking of stars a certain pub in NE29 has a few of its own. With a close to perfect score of 4.3 out of 5 on Trip Advisor, The Wheatsheaf has plenty of favourable reviews, including one last month from a satisfied customer who described the food as ‘absolute amazing’ and another, giving it 5/5, writing: “What a fabulous place such a friendly atmosphere. The food and drinks were fantastic at a great value .. nothing was too much trouble what a great hard working team”
And finally, you don’t have to actually go to New York City to step into the Bronx, as it just so happens to be the name of a pizza shop on Brookland Terrace in New York, North Tyneside. It currently has a rating of 3.5 on Trip Advisor and clearly has a huge fan in one reviewer who branded it a ‘superb’ takeaway and ‘always delicious.’
We can neither confirm that Alicia Keys was actually referring to NE29 when she famously sang ‘New Yorrrrrrk, concrete jungle where dreams are made of’ but you never know!
