While the weather appears to have picked up ever so slightly over the past week, with the sun FINALLY making an appearance, many people in the North East are already thinking of jetting off to warmer climes this summer. And one place you might want to check out is the beach that has just been ranked ‘best in the world’ by Trip Advisor.
And the even better news for Geordies, is that flights to the stunning location will launch at Newcastle Airport in a matter of months. When it comes to making your feelings known on restaurants, tourist attractions and shows, Trip Advisor is the place many people head; whether to l;et rip on a bad experience or reward credit where its due and now, the world famous reviewing site has released its list of the world’s beat beaches as part of its Travellers Choice Awards.
The top 25 features sun-drenched stretches of sand from across the globe and the one that comes out on top for 2025 is Elafonissi Beach on the Greek island of Crete. The glowing description of the location reads: ‘With pink (yes, pink) sands and turquoise waters, Elafonissi Beach is just one of those places you have to see to believe. The shallow lagoons are perfect for curious kids, while the deeper waters invite all sorts of adventure for adults: swimming, snorkeling, you name it. Just make sure to stick around until sunset—you won’t regret it.”
When many people fly to Crete, they fly into Heraklion, but from May you’ll be able to get Jet2 flights from Newcastle to Chania, which just so happens to be the region where Elafonissi Beach is. It’s over 1 hour 40 minutes to get there from the airport, once you’ve flown the four hours from Newcastle to Greece, but it sounds like it’s definitely worth it!
Giving Elafonissi Beach five stars out of five, one reviewer dubbed it ‘an experience like no other’ while another holidaymaker enthused: “This place is just absolutely perfect.”
There isn’t a single UK beach in the world’s best 25, with the highest placing coming in the top European beaches, with Weymouth in 20th place. When it comes to UK beaches, the highest placing in the North East is Roker/Seaburn, with it finishing in 30th, ahead of acclaimed rivals like Bamburgh and Sandhaven.
