Fly-tipping is a crime which can scar neighbourhoods – and councils around the region are eager to deter it.

In recent months, these awful cases of dumped goods have seen people from Newcastle to Peterlee hit with prosecution – and then fines. Now Durham County Council has announced its fixed penalty notice (FPN) fine for flytipping will soar to a maximum of £1,000.

Durham County Council’s move to introduce tougher penalties follows its decision to scrap early payment discounts last summer . It means the maximum FPN for fly-tipping will soar from £400 to £1,000, with littering FPNs rising from £150 to £250 and graffiti and fly-posting FPNs from £100 to £250.

In the last year, everything from computer printers to mattresses has been found spoiling areas of the North East. And in response, the authorities have wasted no time in investigating and bringing those responsible to book.
