Ben Shephard may have only taken to the helm of This Morning last month, swapping out his previous duties on Good Morning Britain for the show, but he has already settled into the primetime role.
Revealing his thoughts on the new gig and his co-host Cat Deeley during a chat with OK! at the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, the presenter revealed he couldn’t be happier. “I’m loving it,” began Ben, 49. “It’s brilliant working with Cat, and it’s brilliant having a lie in! The team are amazing.”
Sharing that one of his favourite parts is the good food that chefs such as Phil Vickery, Clodagh McKenna and Gino D’Acampo whip up during the show, Ben continued: “I get delicious food, it’s amazing. I’m very easily pleased, if someone is happy to cook for me then I’m happy to eat, whatever time it is!”
Ben and Cat took over as the host’s of This Morning after Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield stepped down last year, with Holly exiting five months after her counterpart. Ben attended the Variety Club awards show, which raises money for the children’s charity Variety Club, alongside his former Good Morning Britain colleague and close friend Kate Garraway, who was being awarded a Special Recognition Award for broadcasting in television and radio on the night.
Explaining that he had come alongside Kate to support her, Ben shared that while he may no longer be on Good Morning Britain, he’ll always be part of the show’s family.
“Kate’s getting an award tonight so I thought it’d be good to come along to support her and celebrate that. I’m very much still part of the family, it’s GMB’s tenth birthday today so Richard [Madeley] and Susanna [Reid] are going to come on This Morning to celebrate that as well.”
As Kate accepted her accolade on the night, she gave a special shout-out to Ben and her colleagues while on stage, sharing that they ‘helped me survive’ after the death of her husband, Derek Draper, earlier this year.
Kate said: “Every time I walk through the door on Global, I’m always aware that I’m doing something that is on most people’s bucket list. The energy and the fun that’s there is just fantastic but also when things take a dark turn, suddenly you see this amazing side of people that not just help you go on air every day and look half decent doing your show but come round and literally keep you going and help you survive.
“A special mention, obviously, goes to Ben Shephard for that and for being the most extraordinary person to be by your side for 24 years.”
