A man who subjected a woman to a prolonged assault, which included knocking her unconscious and resulting in extensive facial injuries, has been jailed.
Darren Benson pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, affray and witness intimidation at Durham Crown Court this week.
Paramedics were called to an address in Chester-le-Street in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, May 26. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment for facial injuries.
Later that day Benson, of no fixed abode, threatened another man at the same address with a knife. The 22-year-old was arrested a short time later having been spotted nearby in a car.
He was jailed for five years and four months and issued with restraining orders against both victims for 20 years.
Detective Constable Christopher Spence, of Durham Constabulary, said: “Darren Benson thought he could do what he wanted and get away with it, but he couldn’t.
“This was a terrifying ordeal for both victims which has had a lasting impact.
“I hope outcome at court will provide some closure for them in order to move forward with their lives.”
