Tony Buzbee has bowed out from Diddy’s New York-based legal battle.
Buzbee revealed his decision to withdraw on Monday night after U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams asked him to explain why he failed to disclose that he isn’t permitted to practice in the Southern District of New York and how he plans to resolve the issue.
Buzbee’s notice said that he would wait to appear in court “until such time as he is admitted to practice” in the district. His client will continue to be represented by Curis Law.
“A grievance was filed by Shawn Carter against me alleging I was practicing law in the Southern District of New York without formal admission. Until that’s sorted out I’m going to let my colleagues who are formally admitted push those cases while I continue to march on the New York State cases,” Buzbee told Chron. “We also will be filling cases in Nevada and California very soon.”
Last month, Buzbee made headlines when he was denied the ability to practice in SDNY. The district encompasses New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, and Sullivan counties.
At the time, Buzbee failed to ask for permission to practice in the district before submitting for admission on Jan. 29, 2025. He reportedly only did so because his negligence was pointed out in a lawsuit accusing Jay-Z and Diddy of sexual assault. Buzbee was then denied the ability to practice.
That means he will have to include the denial letter every time he requests permission to litigate in the district, which he didn’t do with Judge Abrams.
The news arrived after the trial lawyer voluntarily dismissed the sexual assault case against Diddy and Hov, which accused the pair of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000.
Since then, the accuser said Buzbee “pushed her” to file the suit. Jay also filed a defamation claim against Buzbee, and a complaint against the accuser, Buzbee, and lawyer David Fortney.
In September, Combs was indicted on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges. He remains incarcerated in Brooklyn.
