A year on from it having its name changed for a slice of TV stardom on Vera, a well known pub in Gateshead will soon host a 00s music icon for their solo gig, two decades on from being famous all over the world for hits like Danger High Voltage and Gay Bar.
It was in the summer of 2003 that Vera legend Brenda Blethyn and co-star David Leon headed to The Central just at the end of the Tyne Bridge, to shoot scenes for the hit ITV drama’s 13th series. After the pub announced to customers that it would be closing its doors, to allow for production to set up and filming to take place, The Central was renamed The Griffin for the purposes of the plot of Tender, a murder mystery that saw Brenda’s alias DCI Stanhope attempted to get to the bottom of the death of Gabi McSwain.
Vera and David’s character Joe were led to The Central in Gateshead, as more secrets about victim Gabi unravelled. The pub was renamed The Griffin for the purposes of the plot, with both the interior and exterior of the Half Moon Lane haunt seen on screen, as a revelation placed the finger of suspicion on a person with a seemingly innocent connection to Gabi and a scripted scuffle took place right outside.
And soon The Central will be the location for a very different kind of event, when Dick Valentine, frontman of American rock act Electric Six, arrives in Gateshead to showcase his new acoustic album Destroy the Children. A teaser for the event reads: “Come experience an evening of merriment, song and tender tender emotion….meet Dick Valentine before, during and after the show….reach directly into his bag for a copy of “The Final Musician”. He still wants to take you to a gay bar…just in a more quiet, intimate tender way!”
Reacting to the post, one fan declared the announcement of Dick arriving in Gateshead was ‘the best news ever.’
