Tory Lanez Reiterates Claims About Megan Thee Stallion Case Lawyer and Roc Nation on “Verdict Day”

Tory Lanez reiterates claims he made in an ethics complaint filed with the State Bar of California last year on “Verdict Day,” a song from his new album Peterson.

As you may recall, last October saw word that Lanez, previously convicted in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, had claimed that his former attorney in the case, Shawn Holley, was in some way affiliated with Roc Nation (Megan signed a management deal with Roc Nation in 2019).

At the time, Holley told TMZ that Lanez’s “meritless claims” had previously been “summarily rejected” by the State Bar. The publication also reported that a prior letter to the State Bar from Holley saw the attorney noting that she had “no relationship” with Roc Nation, nor was the company ever represented by her law firm.

On the new “Verdict Day” track, which also includes an interlude titled “Lawyer Fees,” Lanez raps that his lawyer “left me like she Kevin Liles,” i.e. co-founder of 300 Entertainment, Megan’s former label. This lawyer, Lanez raps, ‘was in bed with my opposition.” From there, Lanez mentions “fuckery from bail amounts” and cites Holley by name, rapping “only a special person could rep you and wanna dead you.”

Later, Lanez laments that his lawyer was “workin’ for my accuser and workin’ for me,” claiming that this was “why Megan always talked like jail was certain for me.” He also goes as far as to claim that his sentence came about “because y’all for them 10 years,” then closes the verse by saying that his lawyer quit “with a smile.”

Both Megan and Roc Nation are also mentioned elsewhere on Peterson. Meanwhile, in “My Shayla,” a Trump-emulating voice, presumably made with A.I., is heard saying “I think it’s time you let that boy outside.” Worth pointing out is that Trump himself doesn’t appear to have ever actually spoken publicly about Lanez or his case. Shortly before the album’s release, Lanez spoke with Gillie and Wallo of Million Dollaz Worth of Game, with the conversation also touching on these same claims.

As those who closely followed the years-long coverage of Lanez’s shooting case will recall, Lanez-favoring misinformation has been rampant on social media. In October of last year, Alex Spiro, an attorney for Megan, spoke with Complex about the then-recent claims of Lanez having been declared “innocent” in the case. This claim was false, though that didn’t stop it from circulating widely.

“Misinformation isn’t gonna be an issue in the court of law where he was convicted and remains convicted and incarcerated,” Spiro told Complex. “The fact that he has nonsense bloggers continuing to spin up garbage, we’re going to take legal action.”
