Traitors star Claudia Winkleman’s interview cut short as publicist storms the set

Claudia Winkleman, the TV star who confidently hosts BBC’s thrilling series The Traitors, wasn’t always so in control. A throwback clip from an interview that didn’t go as planned has resurfaced. Back in 2003, Claudia was interviewing pop band S Club 7, consisting of Tina Barrett, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole, Hannah Spearritt, Bradley McIntosh, Rachel Stevens and Jo O’Meara for the BBC Three series Liquid News. During the chat with four of the members, Claudia brought up the topic of money, which visibly unsettled the group.

She said: “Let’s talk cash… please don’t look at me like you are angry.” She then mentioned that Simon Fuller, the man behind the group, had “90 million” in the bank, referring to reports at the time, and added: “There are rumours that you guys are grumpy because you guys haven’t made mint.” Jon Lee simply responded with a “no,” while the others tried to dodge the question. Claudia persisted, asking: “Are you not grumpy about it at all?” To which singer Jo O’Meara replied: “I think we are all really really lucky to be where we are today at our age and have the bank balances that we do have,” reports the Mirror.

However, before the interview could proceed any further, S Club 7’s publicist stormed onto the set, demanding the interview be stopped. “Can you not ask this question please… I’m not having it,” she told Claudia, adding: “I’ve tried to stop this and I’ve had to walk in here… we are going.” Claudia Winkleman voiced her surprise when a publicist interrupted, complaining she wasn’t told about any off-limits questions as the band decided to exit the studio.

While she is best known for her dazzling roles on Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors, Claudia’s telly career dates back to the ’90s. Starting out with appearances on shows like Holiday and God’s Gift, she made Saturday mornings extra special with Tricky for kids.

Claudia became a BBC staple, fronting Liquid News, Fame Academy and the Strictly spin-off It Takes Two. Since Sir Bruce Forsyth hung up his dancing shoes in 2014, she’s been sharing the spotlight with Tess Daly on Strictly, and her later credits include The Great British Sewing Bee and the Beeb’s Film programme.

Not to mention, Claudia’s chic signature haircut with that famous fringe – so iconic that candidate Count Binface wanted it Grade 1 listed in his 2024 mayoral manifesto, calling it “of exceptional interest” to the country.
