UK holidaymakers heading to Spain have been alerted to a fresh beach restriction in the tranquil coastal town of Torrox. The Costa del Sol hotspot has broadened its existing beach regulations, now banning tents, gazebos and similar structures from being erected on its beaches.
The new rule, ratified by local councillors on February 24, is designed to enhance safety and liberate public spaces, reports Sur in English. Vanessa Lopez, a local councillor, explained that such structures occupy large swathes of the beach, generate excessive noise, and hinder lifeguards’ visibility, making their job more challenging, according to Express.co.uk. She further noted that the prohibition would boost cleanliness and accessibility, ensuring emergency vehicles can access the beach when required.
Torrox first hit the headlines in 2014 as the first municipality in Malaga to impose fines on beachgoers who attempted to reserve spots by leaving deckchairs, umbrellas or personal items unattended. While the latest regulation won’t result in fines for violators, it has sparked debate among tourists and residents.

However, there are some exceptions. The restrictions will not apply to certain special events, including excursions, school visits, and trips for people with disabilities, provided prior approval is obtained.
Moreover, there will be a one-off suspension of the rule for San Juan night, permitting beachgoers to pitch tents from 6pm on June 23 until 1am on June 24. The decision has drawn mixed reactions from locals, with some believing it will enhance the beach experience, while others worry about potential adverse effects on tourism, reports Birmingham Live.
As summer looms, UK holidaymakers eyeing a beach break in Torrox may need to tweak their plans to accommodate these fresh restrictions.
