Next Christmas is 363 days away but you suspect Jason Tindall won’t be receiving any cards off Unai Emery when the festive period next rolls around. The coaching duo almost came to blows midway through Newcastle United’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, only being separated by fourth official Leigh Doughty.
Emery was less than impressed after being told to ‘shush’ by Tindall as the pair argued over Joelinton and Morgan Rogers’ coming together in the opening period. The Villa boss also took issue with Newcastle‘s No 2 consistently sharing the technical area with Eddie Howe, despite new Premier League rules banning two members of staff occupying the space together.
Tindall found himself dismissed during the break soon after following what was described as a ’17-18 man melee’ by Howe at the end of the game. Aston Villa analyst Victor Manas was also dismissed after the altercation but Emery refused to offer any details when quizzed at full-time.
When Tindall’s name came into conversation, Emery simply replied: “Respect always.”
The Spaniard was also extremely unhappy at Jhon Duran’s first-half red card which provided another flashpoint on and off the pitch. The Villa striker stamped on Fabian Schar after the Newcastle defender made a sliding tackle, with referee Anthony Taylor deeming the clash as intentional and reckless.
Emery saw it another way, claiming Duran was simply off balance and therefore unintentional. Both Eddie Howe and Alan Shearer hinted they agreed with the Villa boss, suggesting the decision was harsh.
Discussing the tunnel clash, Howe said: “These things always start out I don’t think with the intention of it happening in the way that it did. There was probably 17 or 18 people trying to calm it down, but what it looks like then are more people are involved.
“No-one wants to see that, it’s not at all how I want my players or staff to be, but sometimes you have to stand up to what you think is right and protect each other.”
