‘Wanted to cry’ – Bruno Guimaraes thanks Newcastle United supporters for touching Brazil display

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has revealed the emotional response he and his teammate Joelinton had after seeing the huge Brazilian flag in the home end at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Magpies secured a dominant 5-1 victory against Sheffield United on the afternoon, which confirmed relegation to the Championship for Chris Wilder’s side.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Guimaraes himself and a Ben Osborn own-goal cancelled out the early opener from Anel Ahmedhodzic in the fifth minute of play.

Eddie Howe’s side have now closed the gap to one point on Manchester United in sixth place, as they look to boost their European hopes before the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

During his post-match press conference, while many would be eager to talk about their goal, Guimaraes took the opportunity to thank the fanbase for the touching display before kick-off – as he revealed what it meant to him and his compatriot Joelinton.

“To be honest I was now speaking with Joe. Me and him, we wanted to cry when we saw this. It was very special,” the Newcastle midfielder said after the game regarding the Brazil flag that was displayed.

“I made some effort to not cry on the pitch because it was very beautiful. My family sent me a message, they were very happy as well.

“Thank you for the whole fans, they have been unbelievable with me and with Joe as well.”

The flag was displayed across the Gallowgate End, with the message: “From Aliança and Rio to Newcastle upon Tyne, a home away from home. Joelinton and Bruno, our Brazilian Geordies.”

Guimaraes is currently the subject of constant transfer links away from the club this summer after Howe revealed the £100million buyout clause that was inserted in his latest contract at the club.

“Having that was well planned and structured in the sense that there’s a finish point,” said Newcastle’s manager regarding the clause that ends on June 30. “We don’t want a summer of speculation. I don’t think that would be healthy for the player or for us.”

Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool have all been credited with an interest in the midfielder. Whether or not they will trigger the clause this summer, remains to be seen.
