Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is set to miss their next three matches following his straight red card in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
In what turned out to be a very lively game at St James’ Park, Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half from the penalty spot. Brighton, though, forced their way back into the game as Yankuba Minteh put the Seagulls back on level terms on the brink of half time.
Things descended into chaos late on in the second half and Gordon was ultimately given his marching orders for a clear push on Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. While Isak was clearly offside earlier in the move, Gordon found himself in a tussle for the ball with his opponent and pushed out towards Van Hecke’s head.
Referee Anthony Taylor wasted no time in reaching for his pocket to show Gordon a straight red card. It wasn’t the only sending off of the game, however, as Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey was later shown a second yellow card moments before extra time.
As Gordon’s push is regarded as violent conduct, he is now set for an extended spell on the sidelines, unless Newcastle opt to appeal and the decision is overturned. The first of the three games he will have to sit out is next weekend’s Premier League meeting with West Ham.
In a devastating blow for Eddie Howe‘s side, he will also miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday, March 16 as bans are served across domestic competitions. Newcastle are set to contest their second final in the competition in the space of two years after their 2023 defeat to Manchester United, but will now be without a key player in Gordon.
The final game of Gordon’s suspension will be their Premier League home fixture against Brentford on April 2. The 24-year-old will then return for their away meeting with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on April 7.
