Wild at Heart stars now: From devastating split, dying ‘penniless’ and cancer diagnosis

ITV drama Wild at Heart was first introduced in 2006 and enjoyed a hugely successful six years on TV, becoming a firm favourite with families across the UK. Seven series of the drama aired in total, with the show coming to an end in 2012 with a special two-hour finale.

Wild at Heart focused on the Trevanion family from Bristol, who relocated to a South African reserve for wild animals, named Leopards Den. The series followed the family’s adventures and struggles in their new home, along with scenes of incredible animals.

Nearly 12 years after Wild at Heart ended, here OK! takes a look at where the cast are now…

Stephen Tomkinson

Stephen Tomkinson
Stephen Tompkinson played Danny in the series

Stephen portrayed veterinary surgeon Danny in Wild at Heart. The role saw him nominated for several awards and he starred in all seven series of the ITV drama.

In recent years, Stephen has starred in ITV’s DCI Banks as detective Alan Banks. The show aired from 2010 from 2016.

He has appeared on stage in Spamalot, White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, A Christmas Carol, and Art. The actor also starred in Sky sitcom Trollied and Ballykissangel.

Amanda Holden

Amanda Holden played Sarah

Amanda played Danny’s wife Sarah, who encouraged the family to relocate to South Africa. Her character was killed off in series three of Wild at Heart, after the family attempted to save their pet cheetah from a bushfire.

The 53 year old is now best known for being a judge on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. She also hosts the Heart Radio breakfast show with Jamie Theakston.

Deon Stewardson

Deon starred as Anders Du Plessis, nicknamed Dup, in Wild at Heart. The character became the Trevanion family’s business partner. He starred in all seven series of the ITV drama.

The actor sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 66. He left behind his partner Marianne and two sons.

Lucy-Jo Hudson

Lucy-Jo Hudson played Rosie

Lucy-Jo Hudson portrayed Danny’s daughter Rosie. She was just a teenager when she arrived in South Africa, but soon ended up helping run the sanctuary.

The actress portrayed Katy Harris in Coronation Street prior to landing the role of Rosie. After Wild at Heart, she starred in Doctors, going on to win Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards.

Lucy-Jo is now best known as Donna-Marie Quinn in Hollyoaks. She took on the role in 2018.

Hayley Mills

Hayley Mills portrayed Caroline in the ITV series

Caroline Du Plessis – Sarah’s mum – was played by actress Hayley Mills. She was introduced in series two and stayed for the rest of the series, after marrying Dup.

Hayley found fame as a child in films such as Parent Trap. She’s also starred in Midsomer Murders, Moving ON and Pitching, as well as many stage productions. She is married to Dynasty actor Maxwell Caulfield.

Thapelo Mokoena

Thapelo Mokoena played Cedric Fatani

Dup’s sidekick Cedric Fatani was played by actor Thapelo Mokoena. Since the series, he has appeared in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and started up his own production company.

Thapelo has also starred in TV shows Trackers and Bulletproof.

Warren Clarke

Warren Clarke played Danny’s estranged father Robert in Wild at Heart. The character only appeared in the final series of the ITV drama.

Warren, best known for starring in police drama Dalziel and Pascoe and A Clockwork Orange, sadly passed away in 2014 at the age of 67. He left a gross estate of £13,056, according to the Mirror, and after his outstanding affairs were settled, this figure was reduced to nil.

Dawn Steele

Dawn Steele played Alice

Alice, played by Dawn Steele, arrived following Sarah’s death in series three, and helped mend Danny’s broken heart. She became the show’s lead after Amanda Holden’s exit.

Since Wild at Heart, Dawn has appeared in Scottish soap River City, ITV drama Liar as well as many stage productions. In 2019, she joined the cast of Holby City as Ange Godard.

Nomsa Xaba

Nomsa Xaba played Nomsa Nguni

Nomsa Xaba portrayed her namesake for the show’s entire run. Nomsa kept the house running and was a confidante to everyone in Wild at Heart.

The South African actress, according to IMDB, has only had one on screen role since then.
