‘Wish I was there now’ – Joy at new Centre Parcs opening 60 miles from Newcastle

The number of people staying in the UK for their holiday remains at a record high, with resorts from companies like Butlins, Haven and Parkdean up and down the country. However, a new resort was just announced by one of the industry frontrunners, Center Parcs.

The proposed site for the company’s first Scottish location is just 60 miles north of Newcastle, and over £400 million in investments are being made in it. This would be another option for North East holidaymakers, as the closest Center Parcs resort before was in Penrith, which opened in 1997.

The new site, near Hawick in the Scottish Borders, will be around 60 miles north-west of Newcastle and 55 miles south of Edinburgh. We take a look at what you, our readership, have to say about the new proposal.

Mostly located in woodland areas, Center Parcs resorts are known for their outdoor activities, and the new Hawick site is sure to prove no different. On the planning proposal, they hope to take advantage of the two lochs on site, and provisionally plan to build a Nature & Heritage centre and an Activities area.

One reader said, “I go here every year with my young boys, and it’s the best holiday ever in the UK. Yes, abroad can be cheaper. But you’ll never experience a holiday like a holiday at Centre Parcs! If you love outdoors/activities and log cabins, then it’s the best!”

The woodland setting allows visitors to relax, and a proposed biodiverse wildflower meadow helps promote the new site as an escape into nature. One reader even said “wish I was at Center Parcs now”.

One parent highlighted an important factor when booking at a Center Parcs resort, which many criticise as being too expensive. They point out health issues that could impact their ability to go elsewhere when many say it’s cheaper to go abroad: “My two daughters are autistic. Travelling aboard is super stressful. CP is a chance to park up the car for a week, feel safe, cook our own food the way we like it, and do the same activities every day. It’s like being in a different world where there’s no cars or phones or anything to distract us.”

Compared to the hassle of air travel, some readers appreciated having such a resort so close to home: “If you enjoy nature, walks, sports, relaxing then it’s great. Yes, some things are expensive, but 1.5hr and 2.5hr travel for me is ideal.”

Do you have any fond memories of Center Parcs or do you think that holiday money is better spent elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.
