Good Morning Britain’s stars celebrate its 10th birthday – from saddest moment to comedy gold

From England’s 2022 Women’s Euros triumph to the coronavirus pandemic, the past 10 years have been hugely eventful — and Good Morning Britain has been there to cover it all. The breakfast show is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special episode as the likes of Susanna Reid, Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley reflect on a decade of news.

For Kate, 56, there are few moments as memorable as her coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022. “It was such an honour to be part of it, a real sense of history,” she says. “Being there as a commentator at Buckingham Palace in the days after her passing and then again throughout the funeral day itself.”

However, she admits chatting to Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger is a close second — particularly given Kate’s connections to the character. “On the third Bridget Jones movie, she came into the gallery to watch how our show is put together and even used some of our studio crew in the filming,” Kate smiles.

“Then I went onto the set of Bridget’s bedroom and she said, ‘Welcome to your home.’ So much of my life seems to have echoed the character Bridget Jones’ adventures!”

Kate wasn’t the only presenter who’s had a brush with the big screen — Charlotte Hawkins, 48, made her film debut thanks to the show. “I was asked to appear in Bradley Cooper’s film Burnt,” she recalls. “I got to interview him about it. A moment I will never forget!”

Despite grilling ex-PM Boris Johnson before his resignation, Susanna’s most unforgettable moment harks back to her first show in 2014. “I was sitting next to the wonderful Ben Shephard, who just as the opening credits were rolling whispered, ‘You’ll never get a second chance to enjoy this moment because this is the only moment we’ll ever launch this programme to the nation,’” says Susanna, 53.

But for Ed Balls, the former politician will never forget “kicking Susanna in the head” live on GMB earlier this year. “It wasn’t on purpose! It demonstrated what happens when people put their feet on the airline seat in front of you. You might kick someone, which I did!

“Susanna was so brilliant about it. I’ve never felt more apologetic.”
